018: Leading A Movement with Harleen McLean

This week I’m speaking Harleen McLean of Harleen McLean Interiors

Harleen has had a fascinating career beginning in Kenya where she grew up and started an interior furnishings company which grew into large scale franchise operation to her relocation to London where she now operates Harleen McLean interiors and is leading a movement of Biophilic design in the U.K. design that serves deeply integrate the natural world into the manmade.

I was particularly excited to speak with Harleen as she launches her Awestruck exhibition starting on the 30th July dedicated to Biophilia at the Adrem dream space located in Clerkenwell.

The exhibition is fascinating example of authentic marketing driving an impactful and passion filled movement. The event is creating a community of experts in the associated fields, increasing awareness and attracting an audience and potential clients not just for herself but for all who are taking part – the exhibition includes public talks with other experts, bespoke pieces and a series of workshops and seminars.

In this interview Harleen discusses the communication, leadership skills developed to create the teams and exhibition and the intended impact she wants to create by bringing well being focused design to larger audience.

017: From Architect to CEO with Safia Qureshi

This episode is the last of the mini series speaking with architects who have gone beyond the traditional realm of architectural practice entering into new design genres and businesses.

Today I speak with Safia Qureshi, co-founder of environmental research and design studio, Studio D Tale and founder / CEO of innovative returnable package service, Cup Club.

Cup Club was born as a research idea within Studio D Tale to eliminate single use plastics. Realising the potential of her idea and driven by a commitment to protect the welfare of our environment, Safia has made an inspiring journey from architect to CEO. She has found investment for her idea, is partnering with catering companies, facilities management companies, retailers and brands and has gone into production with the first iteration of their reusable, traceable coffee cups.

Cup Club launched a successful pilot scheme at the RA in 2017 and also won the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Innovation Prize.

I hope you find as much inspiration in this interview as I did, and I’d love to hear from more architects who are utilising their architectural skillsets to cross boundaries into different disciplines and industries.



016: New Business Frontiers with Jason Bruges

On Today’s episode I continue the theme of speaking with architects who have gone beyond the traditional practice of architecture and ventured into new design genres and even created their own.

This week's conversation is with Jason Bruges, an architect, artist, experience designer and the director of Jason Bruges Studio. After being educated and trained as an architect, working for Fosters and Partners, Jason transferred his problem-solving and design skills into experience and interactive design.

Today Jason Bruges reveals how he leveraged his training in architecture to found and direct one of the world's leading experience design firms with projects internationally installed in Landmark locations.

Jason Bruges Studio creates interactive spaces that combine architecture, art installation and interaction design, which basically means these spaces and installations respond to the people who inhabit them.



015: From Jelly Making to Experience Design with Harry Parr

This week I’m speaking with Harry Parr co-founder of Bompas and Parr. Starting from an architectural diploma project at university, Harry has gone from making 3D printed Jelly Moulds to a large London based multi sensory design experience agency that has invented its own genre of design and architecture.

Harry’s story is fascinating, his background is in architecture and their company can be seen to resemble an architectural practice however their clients include luxury food and drink brands, museums, fragrances and more. Instead of buildings their creations include bespoke installations made from food, jelly, whiskey and a vast array of gustatory, olfactory and haptic delights.

This episode is filled with entrepreneurial gusto and offers some great possibilities for what is possible for architects wanting to break the (jelly) mould.

013: Monetize Your Sketchbooks with Zean Macfarlane

This week I’m speaking with Zean Macfarlane of the Zean Macfarlane Architecture Studio. Zean is a young architectural designer who has developed a series of effective marketing strategies on social media enabling him to grow large communities. Zean has created multiple revenue streams from his online audience by self-publishing a series of Ebooks, selling prints of his work and offering online mentoring to students as well as using his social media output as marketing collateral for his practice.
